Overview SQL 2005 Adventure Works OLTP

SQL 2005 Adventure Works OLTP

SQL Server 2005 sees a number of changes in SQL Server, not the least of which is a new sample database, Adventure Works Cycles. If you've been wishing for a sample database with more real world scenarios than Northwind provided, Adventure Works is a definite improvement. The documentation for this sample was produced from the Adventure Works database which ships with SQL Server 2005.

Generating this sample was as simple as locating the source SQL, opening DBDocumentor, and defining a simple project. Other than providing the textual description of this page, the project used the DBDocumentor installation defaults. All of the descriptions you see for the various SQL object attributes were present in the original source SQL. This means that if you've been providing descriptions for your SQL in either of Enterprise Manager, Query Analyzer, or the new SQL Management Studio, then DBDocumentor will automatically process and include them, assuming they're in the SQL files you supply to DBDocumentor. Of course if you prefer to not use the extended property based description of SQL Server 7.0 and higher, DBDocumentor has a rich set of annotation tags, which you can learn about in the DBDocumentor manual.

Version 4.20 of DBDocumentor extends support for SQL Server 2000 and 2005 by including SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) RDL support. By simply selecting to process RDL reports, and supplying the RDL files to DBDocumentor, you can obtain documentation of the queries in the report, and have them hyperlinked to all the other SQL objects you've included in the project.
